Hi, I’m Marguerite Smith—an electrical engineer, patent agent, and advocate for inventors and inclusive innovation.
I graduated from Miami University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management, where I developed not only a love for problem-solving but a strong foundation in leadership and equity. Whether I was rebuilding student organizations or founding an annual breast cancer research fundraiser through volleyball, I’ve always been driven by the belief that technical excellence and community-building go hand in hand.
After college, I began working as a patent engineer, collaborating directly with inventors across the U.S., U.K., and India. In this role, I’ve had the privilege of transforming ideas into intellectual property by drafting patent applications, conducting prior art searches, and supporting prosecution strategies across a wide range of technologies. My experience has deepened my respect for the legal frameworks that protect innovation and has strengthened my desire to become a patent attorney so I can advocate for inventors at the highest level.
Intellectual property law has always been part of my story. My dad, an inventor and engineer, has patents related to vacuum cleaners.
Today, I combine my technical background, IP experience, and passion for equity to help shape a future where everyone has access to the tools and protection they need to create. Whether I’m mentoring students, supporting inventors, or preparing for law school, I remain committed to building bridges between engineering, law, and advocacy.
When I’m not writing patents or mentoring aspiring engineers, you can find me on the volleyball court, cheering on women in STEM, or writing about the intersection of law and technology.
